A Love That Endures, A Community That Embraces: Dee’s Story
How one resident followed faith, honored love, and found home at The Willows
Dee and Michael Sharples first heard about The Willows during a presentation at their local branch church. They had an opportunity to see it for themselves on a work trip. What they found was more than just a beautiful and vibrant community—they discovered familiar faces, new friendships, and an atmosphere full of life and joy. One thing stood out immediately: no one was talking about ailments or aches and pains. “It just felt right,” Dee recalled with a smile.
After Michael’s seven fulfilling years serving at The Principia as Chief Executive, the couple retired and returned to their home in Florida. But as time passed, the pull toward The Willows grew stronger. They realized it was more than just a nice idea—it was the next step in their journey together.
Michael, ever the planner, meticulously organized their entire move. From hiring movers to coordinating every last detail, he had it all covered. But just before the big move, Michael unexpectedly passed on.
A Moment of Love, Not Loss
Dee, grounded in decades of spiritual practice, didn’t experience grief in the usual way.
“We had a 58-year love affair,” she shares, smiling. “That kind of joy doesn’t end. It continues.”
And so, she followed through on the plan Michael had so lovingly crafted. One daughter flew with her from Florida; the other met them at The Willows with the furniture. Every piece fell into place.
And through it all, Dee felt Michael’s presence—steady, supportive, and full of love.
Finding New Joy
Dee has embraced life at The Willows with open arms. She quickly connected with her neighbor Lee, someone who shares a similar background and even lived in many of the same places. From daily activities to spontaneous laughter, Dee feels surrounded by spiritual momentum and new possibilities.
“It’s very hard to be bored at The Willows,” Dee laughs. “There’s just so much to do!”

Whether it's participating in campus activities or exploring local events, she’s embraced it all with an open heart.
Family is never far—her daughters visit often. And when their families join them there is plenty of room for everyone in the comfortable guest villas on campus. On one recent visit, her great-granddaughters even got to go to Disneyland—a memory their family treasures.
But for Dee, what defines The Willows is the sense of inclusion.
“There are no cliques,” she says. “Everyone belongs. It’s so welcoming, so complete.”
Her daughter captured it best when she looked around on move-in day and said, “It’s just like Camp!”
That joy—the warmth of community, the feeling of home—has stayed with Dee ever since.
The Willows is a loving community for Christian Scientists seeking fellowship, joy, and spiritual growth. With your support, we can continue to welcome individuals like Dee—offering comfort, connection, and a place where every chapter is met with love.
