August Newsletter - A Special Bond with Sunland Home Foundation

About an hour south of The Willows, we are blessed to share a close and loving relationship with Sunland Home Foundation—a beautiful Christian Science care facility in Encinitas, CA where individuals relying fully on prayer for healing are supported with both spiritual encouragement and the loving, practical care of Christian Science nurses.

Executive Director Kathy Arthur says, “I just love that our name is Sunland HOME Foundation. Mrs. Eddy described home as a power, not a place, and it’s that dear sense of home—which includes our Christian Science family—that I cherish.”

One of the strongest connections The Willows shares with Sunland is through three of its devoted Board of Trustees members who reside here at The Willows: Cheryl Ranson, Jane Lampman, and Cali McClure. Collectively, they have served the Sunland Board for over 10 years—a commitment they each hold close to heart.

“I so appreciate the joy, calm, and gentle professionalism expressed by the Sunland staff!”    Jane Lampman, CS

“It’s a joy to serve on the Board of Sunland! I love being an active part of Sunland’s loving work that is supportive of the healing mission of the Christian Science movement.”  Cali McClure, CS

“Sunland is a very special place, where kindness, compassion, and professionalism are beautifully expressed 24/7. We're blessed to have such a high standard of Christian Science nursing available to us!”  Cheryl Ranson

In addition to round-the-clock loving Christian Science nursing care with healing expectancy, Sunland offers “Sheltered Living,” a newer option designed for individuals who wish to enjoy the freedom from daily household responsibilities while remaining part of an active Christian Science community. Kathy Arthur describes it this way:

“It’s for those who no longer want the cares of independent living but still enjoy being part of an active Christian Science community—with support available if needed. Naturally, friendships and a sense of family grow as the group enjoys church outings, cultural activities like concerts and plays, lunch gatherings, and scenic beach drives.”

The relationship between The Willows and Sunland Home Foundation is built on mutual support and heartfelt connection. Each community brings something special to the other, enriching both in deeply meaningful ways.

On many occasions, Christian Science nurses who live at The Willows extend their healing ministry to Sunland, offering skilled care and spiritual reassurance to its occupants when needed.

Meanwhile, some residents of The Willows take refuge at Sunland visiting for rest and study—or, when needed, can stay temporarily to receive dedicated nursing care while working through a physical challenge.

The spirit of giving flows both ways. Every Valentine’s Day, The Willows residents lovingly create handmade cards for the patients and staff at Sunland, spreading joy and affection from one spiritual home to another.  Sunland staff make the journey north to deliver a beautiful bouquet of flowers for The Willows’ lobby and surprise residents with homemade cookies tucked into their mailboxes—thoughtful gestures that bring smiles and remind everyone of the love that connects our communities.

We also cherish the tradition of attending Sunland’s Annual Meeting. The Willows provides transportation for residents to make the trip and take part in this inspiring gathering, strengthening the spiritual bond and shared support for the healing work being done at Sunland.

It’s a relationship grounded in more than proximity—it's rooted in mutual care, shared values, and the active expression of love in all its forms. Together, The Willows and Sunland demonstrate the quiet power of divine Love—uniting two communities in healing, joy, and mutual support.

As Kathy Arthur so warmly puts it:

“Sunland is blessed to have you, our Willows family, so close. We are so grateful that you pray for, love, and support our healing Christian Science nursing mission. This fall, we’ll be reaching out to invite you to Sunland for a tour and lunch—we hope to see you here!”
