May 2025 Newsletter - Meet our Residents: Dee Sharples
Dee and Michael Sharples first heard about The Willows during a presentation at their local branch church. They had an opportunity to see it for themselves on a work trip. What they found was more than just a beautiful and vibrant community—they discovered familiar faces, new friendships, and an atmosphere full of life and joy. One thing stood out immediately: no one was talking about ailments or aches and pains. “It just felt right,” Dee recalled with a smile.
After Michael’s seven fulfilling years serving at The Principia as Chief Executive, the couple retired and returned to their home in Florida. But as time passed, the pull toward The Willows grew stronger. They realized it was more than just a nice idea—it was the next step in their journey together.
Michael, ever the planner, meticulously organized their entire move. From hiring movers to coordinating every last detail, he had it all covered. But just before the big move, Michael unexpectedly passed on. Dee, grounded in love, never experienced grief. Instead she described their marriage as a “58-year love affair”—a bond so deep it continually brings her joy to speak about him.
Honoring Michael’s plans, Dee decided to carry on with the move. One daughter flew with her from Florida to California, while the other met them at The Willows with the furniture. Thanks to Michael’s foresight, everything went smoothly—and Dee felt his presence guiding her every step of the way.
Life at The Willows has been a joyful new chapter. Dee quickly found her rhythm, connecting with her neighbor Lee, who shares a similar background and has lived in many of the same places. “It’s very hard to be bored at The Willows,” Dee laughs. “There’s just so much to do!” Whether it's participating in campus activities or exploring local events, she’s embraced it all with an open heart.
Family is never far—her daughters visit often with their families, staying in the comfortable guest houses on campus. On one recent visit, her great-granddaughter even got to go to Disneyland—a memory their family treasures.
What Dee loves most about The Willows? “There are no cliques,” she says. “Life here feels so complete.” From day one, she felt right at home in The Willows community, surrounded by warmth, inclusion, and fellowship.
“It’s just like Camp!” her daughter beamed when they first arrived. For Dee, that joyful recognition was all the reassurance she needed. Ever since, it’s meant laughter, connection, and the comforting feeling that she’s exactly where she’s meant to be.
